Capturing the glow of pregnancy and expecting a baby is one of the most magical times in a woman’s life, with Maternity photography becoming a cherished way for mothers-to-be to mark this beautiful, special moment in their lives. Maternity sessions are one of my most popular sessions, so I thought we could take a look at the best time to book your session and give you some tips to ensure you capture the essence of pregnancy beautifully.

THE BEST TIME TO BOOK YOUR SESSION

The best time for a maternity photo shoot typically falls between 28 to 36 weeks of pregnancy. By this stage, your baby bump is beautifully visible, but you’re still comfortable enough to pose for the camera and enjoy your session. Scheduling your session within this window allows us to capture the most beautiful portraits for you but you can actually book your session any time from 20 weeks onwards.

WHY BOOK MATERNITY PORTRAITS?

Celebration of Motherhood: Maternity portraits are a beautiful way to celebrate the journey of motherhood. They document your beautiful baby bump and recording the welcoming of a new life into your family.

A Moment in Time: Although it may seem like you have to wait a long 9 months before you meet your newborn baby, pregnancy is really a fleeting moment in life. Maternity portraits capture this transient phase perfectly, creating lasting memories for you and your family to cherish.

Bonding Experience: Portrait sessions often involve partners and other children, making it a bonding experience for the entire family as they prepare to welcome the newest member.  These are portraits your entire family will cherish for years.

Empowerment and Confidence: Pregnancy brings about significant changes to body.  A professional maternity shoot can help expectant mothers feel empowered and confident in your skin, showcasing the beauty of pregnancy.  S don’t realise just how stunning they are until they see it for themselves in the portraits we create.

Customisation and Creativity: Maternity sessions offer endless possibilities for customisation and creativity, from outdoor shoots that harness the beauty of nature to themed photoshoots that reflect personal stories or interests.  Together we can create a truly personal experience that uniquely reflects you.

TIPS FOR BOOKING YOUR MATERNITY SESSION

1. Plan Ahead: Given the ideal timeframe, start looking for a maternity photographer during your second trimester. This allows ample time for planning the session’s details, including location, wardrobe, and theme.

2. Consider Your Comfort: Choose a photographer who makes you feel comfortable and understands your vision for the shoot. Comfort and connection are crucial for capturing natural, beautiful portraits.

3. Discuss Ideas and Expectations: Communicate your ideas, expectations, and any concerns with your photographer. Whether you prefer a more natural setting or a studio session, your photographer can provide guidance on how to bring your vision to life.

4. Wardrobe and Accessories: Many photographers offer a selection of maternity gowns and accessories for the shoot. Discuss wardrobe options ahead of time, and consider incorporating personal items like ultrasound photos or baby shoes for a personal touch.

5. Timing is Everything: The golden hour—just after sunrise or before sunset—provides soft, flattering light perfect for location photography. Schedule your session during these times for the most beautiful lighting.

6. Include Family Members: Including your partner or other children in the session can make for meaningful and heartwarming photos, capturing the excitement and love that surrounds the new arrival.
